An eating disorder is a mental illness which has a 10% mortality rate, anorexia even 18%. Carry out the eating disorder quiz on this site if you are not sure if you suffer from an eating disorder or not. In any case, consult with your doctor or health care professional.
Binge Eating Disorder Binge eating is the most common type of eating disorder. It describes the situation where a person eats too much compared to another person in the same situation. During a binge eating disorder phase the person eats very fast a large amount of food where the person afterwards is often very ashamed of this behavior and tries to compensate it with vomiting or extensive exercise. If this habit repeats often then you might suffer from a binge eating disorder.
Bulimia Eating Disorder Binge eating can lead to bulimia. You suffer from bulimia when you have a binge eating situation more than twice a week. During a phase of bulimia you usually do not have control over your eating habits. You just eat way too much, then feel bad and vomit to avoid overweight and to compensate for the excessive eating. Bulimia is usually not about food but the mental disorder behind it where the person tries to get control over their life. Some people vomit after almost every meal. If you have this habit more than twice a week you should immediately seek professional help. This eating disorder is not harmless as many want to think and bulimia treatment can take some time. That's why there are several specialized eating disorder treatment centers. Bulimia is also not about underweight. A person with bulimia is usually of normal weight or overweight.
Anorexia Eating Disorder The warning signs of anorexia are not the same. Different to bulimia, persons suffering from anorexia are underweight. Any eating disorder has its cause in a mental illness where the person sees itself either over- or underweight and tries to excessively control their weight and body shape. An anorexic person always believes to be overweight, no matter how thin she or he really is. They therefore continue to diet and even vomit frequently until they finally die. This is also different to bulimia where the bulimic person usually has no control over their eating habit while the anorexic person clearly controls their food supply by self-starvation.
How can anorexia be prevented? The best way is to look for professional help in one of the better eating disorder treatment centers. The bulimic person is usually ashamed of their eating disorder and more likely to seek help therefore because at some point he or she can admit to have a problem. The anorexic person on the other hand often does not recognize the problem of an eating disorder because she is doing what she does voluntarily and intentional in order to achieve a goal, which usually is looking better or trying to get satisfaction achieving the 'perfect body'. Often the only way on how to prevent anorexia is to simply force the anorexic person to get a eating disorder treatment.
